Simple Stats for Evaluating Crime Reductions
Presenter: Andrew Wheeler
Data Scientist – Crime De-Coder
Evaluating whether a crime reduction intervention is more complicated than just saying crime went up or down. This presentation discusses a metric, the weighted-displacement-difference (WDD), developed by Andrew Wheeler and Jerry Ratcliffe, that makes it easy for an analyst to estimate how well an intervention worked. E.g. our hotspots reduced 40 crimes (plus and minus 10 crimes) relative to control areas.
The presentation will show simple spreadsheet or online tools to calculate the metric, how to choose control areas in practice, and extensions to the metric such as evaluating an intervention continuously over time, combining multiple crime types, or using different temporal time periods.
This event is free for VCAN members and $10 for non-members.
Event is on April 11, 2025, from 1pm – 3pm Eastern Time. Registration closes at COB on Tuesday, April 8, 2025.
Login details will be sent by COB on Wednesday, April 9, 2025.
