Presentation Abstract:

The adoption of Automated License Plate Readers (ALPR) by law enforcement agencies around the world is increasing. It is important to understand the challenges, concerns, and best practices in the collection, storage, and interpretation of this critical evidence. Crime Analysist must be educated in the ways ALPR companies collect this data. This knowledge will assist crime analysists in formulating a pattern of life to aid investigations. The speaker will provide detailed case studies on the use of ALPR technology for investigations.

Methodology
The session will encompass Automated License Plate Readers capabilities and how different systems process and identify license plate images and vehicle classification content. These capabilities will be presented via PowerPoint, software demonstration, and detailed nationally known case studies.
Technology and Trust
Many communities see Automated License Plate Readers (ALPR), as force multipliers. These same communities may also face concerns about becoming a “surveillance state”. Sound access controls, audit trails, and verifiable results facilitate trust without citizens being made to feel uneasy.
Learning Objectives
• Participants will understand the current state of ALPR.
• Participants will understand the various levels of plate and vehicle detection capabilities.
• Participants will understand how to choose the relevant type of ALPR for their agency.
